FOLDED is a physics based puzzle and action-platformer video game created by Michael Dexter and developed by Clixter Penguin Games.
The game is based on old 2000s Adobe Flash games and cartoons, specifically ones from the Object Show Community (Battle for Dream Island, Inanimate Insanity, etc.). With an early 2010s art style, fast paced movement, and a laid back EDM soundtrack, everything folds together to create a casual video game anyone can pick up and enjoy, even if you haven't played a game in a while.
We meet our friend, The Paper, who is about to pay their taxes on tax day. However, just after they put away the envelope containing their returns, the evil The Scissors swoops in and not only destroys The Paper's mailbox, but also rips up all of their tax returns, scattering the shreds all across the area! The Paper, ready to get revenge, and REALLY not wanting to go to prison for tax evasion, heads off to go find their tax return shreds and to teach The Scissors a lesson...
FOLDED is a platformer game with an emphasis on puzzle solving, momentum conservation, and time attack. Each stage contains a small platforming challenge with a paper shred at the end, being your goal. Along the way, you can find Doodles that can unlock special side content, but are quite tricky to find and/or collect.
The big name of the game is the momentum and speed. The Paper is able to fold into 7 different forms of origami, each with their own abilities and stats. By using them in succession with each other, you are able to gain crazy amounts of speed, which, when combined with memorization, can lead to you clearing stages in record times.
Once you get a good time, you can send them to your friends and challenge them to beat it! You can also challenge them to complete the stage in the least amount of rips and folds as well.
FOLDED will be released on Steam in 2024-2025, and will be completely free of charge. You will be able to download the game the second it releases, and it will be the full game, with no added content in the future (although, DLC could be created if there is enough support and ideas.)
The game will also be released with a downloadable version of the soundtrack. The soundtrack will be optional, and will be sold for $0.99 USD. Buying the soundtrack also gives you full rights to use the game's music, with no credit necessary (but appreciated!). This is strictly there for if you want to support the developers, as you can also listen to the soundtrack in-game as well if unlocked.
The game will be compatible with Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Steam Deck devices. However, performance will depend on your computer's stats. The game will be tested on all devices listed above to make sure they function properly, though any issues after release can be sent to us via email.
Q: If the game is free, how do you intend to profit off of it?
A: We don't! We want everyone to enjoy our very first game for free, no matter what. However, as stated above, the soundtrack will be $0.99 USD, and so will the full source code of the game for anyone that would like to mod the game (which we 100% would love!). These two are completely optional, however, and are simply ways to support us.
Q: Will the game ever come to mobile devices/consoles?
A: For mobile devices, while we could, it would not be fun to play. FOLDED requires over 10 buttons to be used, and putting all of that on a touch screen could spell disaster. We have thought of making a "pocket" version of the game with a different direction, though that is simply an idea, and we don't have the support nor the development materials to make such a project.
As for consoles, that would require us to work with a publisher, which we do not have access to. While we would love to have the game ported to consoles (especially the Switch!), we just cannot do it at the moment, and likely never will be able to.
Q: Is FOLDED family-friendly?
A: Absolutely! FOLDED can be played by anyone of all ages. However, some developer conversations shown in the side-content contain swearing, though it has been blocked out/censored. The rest of the game is completely clean!
Q: Will the game have controller support?
A: The game will natively come with FULL controller support! However, you cannot change your button mappings due to a lot of internal issues, and you will also need to alter your settings slightly to give it the best experience.
Q: How long is the game?
A: The game is about 1-2 hours long, if including all content.
Q: Are other languages supported?
A: The game is currently only in English, as that is the team's native tongue.
Q: Am I able to help with the project?
A: We are not currently looking for any new members for the team.
